…In a historical half-timbered house from 1789 is our pension Karina. Our pension is only a few minutes walk from the Schwerin Castle, the Schwerin Theater, the Schwerin Museum or the Schwerin Cathedral. Lake Schwerin is practically around the corner. Our guesthouse at Schwerin Castle is located in the Werderstraße Schwerin, which leads directly to the Schwerin Castle.
Built in 1789 – opening “Neustadt-Schänke”
Our house was already built between 1789 by the honorable carpenter Johann Heinrich Eichfeldt in classic half-timbered construction. Whether this is a family member of the Schwerin executioner (or executioner) dynasty, we can no longer say. What is certain, however, is that a small inn was already operated on the first floor at Schwerin Castle at that time. Presumably, the owner of the house will have pursued his carpentry work in the courtyard – while his wife ran the “Neustadt-Schänke”. In fact, the restaurant lasted for more than 100 years until a new owner converted the taprooms into a game and poultry shop. In the years that followed, dairy, fish and wine merchants took turns, and for a short time there was even a post office on the ground floor.
1969 – “Betrieb in der Handelsorganisation” (HO)
It is a stroke of luck and pure coincidence that it did not fall victim to the socialist wrecking ball at the end of the 1970s. Unfortunately, many other historic half-timbered houses in the neighborhood did. The house was rebuilt after a fire in the century before last on the border road from Schwerin’s Schelfstadt to Werdervorstadt. Since then, it once again housed a fish store in the first floor rooms, which was initially run privately and later by the Trade Organization (HO) of the GDR.
1990 – Öffnung der “Eis-Café-Bar”
It was not until 1990 that the “ice cream café bar” Karina was established here after extensive reconstruction work. Over the years, the rooms of the café and the rest of the house were further remodeled and modernized. The result was Café Karina, as many guests have come to know it in recent years. Since 1997, Café Karina has housed a guesthouse with 5 small and fine rooms at fair prices.
2013 – Neu-Öffnung der “Pension Karina”
In the summer of 2013, my husband and I bought the house and lovingly renovated all the rooms of the guesthouse in Werderstraße. Meanwhile we accommodate 4 single rooms on the mezzanine floor, which can also be bedded up on request and a family room in the attic. We welcome you in our small and fine as well as beautiful and modern guesthouse rooms, which hopefully leave nothing to be desired.
Our guesthouse is very popular with our guests because of its location near the Schwerin Castle and because of its proximity to the Schwerin Theater and Museum. Schwerin is a beautiful city and worth a visit to spend your vacation here. Today, the café shines with a breakfast lounge and a wide selection of café specialties and breakfast offerings. Not only locals, but also guests of our state capital have come to appreciate this. Our in-house bakery store offers a variety of rolls and other baked goods fresh from the oven for breakfast at our café or at your home. From 2021 we also offer our homemade waffle specialties, which are well received by our guests of the guesthouse in Werderstraße.
